Community
Events
Natural Hair education is essential — and we are here to make it accessible.
The Embold Project’s community events create spaces where students and families feel seen, affirmed, and supported. Through natural hair education, affirmation, and access to culturally relevant resources, our events help young people show up to school and community spaces confidently—as their full, natural selves.
Cultivate Sisterhood
Encouraging meaningful connections and collective support among students and community members.
Rewrite the Narrative
Our community events challenge harmful stereotypes about natural hair and identity by creating space for honest conversation, learning, and affirmation.
Youth Leadership in Action
Centering young leaders as organizers, facilitators, and change-makers within our events.
Celebrate Culture & Identity
Our events center culture, pride, and self-expression, reinforcing positive messages about natural hair and identity in community spaces.
Past PartnersProFro:
This ‘Fro Means Business
a collaborative event hosted by The Embold Project and JHU FLOC at The Johns Hopkins Life Design Lab that challenged harmful narratives equating professionalism with conformity. The program affirmed that natural hair and cultural expression belong in professional spaces
Natural Hair Lesson
The event opened with a natural hair lesson that affirmed natural and textured hair as professional, polished, and worthy of care. Participants learned practical styling techniques and engaged in hands-on hair care, reinforcing confidence in showing up authentically.
Professionalism Tips
JHU FLOC led a session on professionalism that challenged traditional, exclusionary standards. The discussion emphasized that professionalism is rooted in confidence, preparation, and self-presentation—not the suppression of natural hair or identity.
Mock Interviews
The program concluded with mock interviews, where participants practiced interview skills in a supportive environment. This hands-on experience allowed students to apply what they learned while building confidence in professional settings.
Fades, Braids,
& Beyond+
a community back-to-school event hosted at the UMD Baltimore Community Engagement Center in partnership with United Way of Central Maryland and SSFA Baltimore. The event focused on supporting students’ confidence and school readiness through access to hair care and positive self-expression.
Free Styles
Professional stylists from Lovely Laced Styles provided students with free back-to-school hair services, including fresh cuts and braided styles. Access to professional styling helped students begin the school year feeling confident, cared for, and ready to show up to school with pride.
Natural Hair Lesson
The Embold Project led a hands-on hair lesson where students learned fun, simple hairstyles they could recreate on their own. This activity emphasized confidence, self-care, and creativity, giving students practical tools to maintain their hair and feel good about who they are throughout the school year.
