We’re using coils as a powerful entry point to celebrate Black voice, literature, and creative expression—showing girls that their hair, their stories, and their perspectives all belong in writing and in print. In partnership with Taji Cooper’s national literacy tour, this free event invites girls to explore culture, identity, and self-expression through a series of engaging, hands-on experiences. Students will have the chance to develop a creative writing piece about their hair that will be published in The Coillection.
The Coillection is a curated anthology of stories written by young Black girls (3 - 6th grade) from Baltimore City, exploring their hair journeys, identities, and lived experiences. The collection will feature approximately 16-20 pieces, including poems, personal narratives, and other forms of creative expression. Each contribution will be paired with a professional headshot, honoring the voice and presence behind every story.
Through this collection, natural hair becomes a powerful lens for celebrating culture, amplifying Black girlhood, and expanding representation in literature. The Coillection creates space for girls to see their stories, their beauty, and their voices reflected authentically in print.
